Exploring the Past Through Aromas: An Archaeological Discovery in Armenia Reveals a Sensory Connection to the 5th Century

During archaeological excavations in the village of Ohanavan in Armenia, an incense burner containing remnants of 5th-century incense was unearthed by archaeologists from a rock structure dating back to the High Middle Ages.

The incense burner, which carried 5th-century incense, underwent meticulous cleaning by specialists, with the incense scheduled for detailed analysis. This incense burner was among the 56 archaeological objects discovered within the medieval rock structure of Ohanavan.

After carefully cleaning the centuries-old dust at the Museum Object Restoration Laboratory, which operates under the Service for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Environment and Museums-Reserves of Armenia, this artifact revealed preserved incense, paving the way for innovative research.

This discovery marks a significant addition to our understanding of the region's history and ancient practices. An incense burner is a vessel made for burning incense in some solid form during spiritual and religious ceremonies. This was reported by the State Non-Commercial Organization (SNCO) of the Service for the Protection of Historical Environment and Cultural Reserves of Armenia.

Archaeologist Ashot Piliposyan commented on the find, noting the exceptional preservation of the incense: "The incense burner was covered in dust, but upon cleaning it, experts discovered incense dating back to the 5th century, emitting a very pleasant aroma." This find offers a rare sensory connection to the past.

The SNCO plans to conduct further research on the incense to identify its composition and origins. This analysis aims to uncover more about the types of incense used in the region during the High Middle Ages and their possible uses.

This discovery in Ohanavan offers a unique insight into the religious and cultural practices of medieval Armenians, demonstrating the ongoing importance of archaeological work in uncovering the rich tapestry of Armenian history.

Ohanavan is a village in the Ashtarak Municipality of the Aragatsotn Province in Armenia.
